Description
These vintage floats were used in the 1920s and 1930s in Astoria’s salmon fishing industry.
Each authentic float was used in the Columbia River and is made from old-growth cedar, which is no longer harvested.
They were turned on a lathe and painted to mark a particular fisherman’s cork lines at the top of their gillnets in the water.
The wood grain and age marks make each one unique. They have been cleaned of wax and old paint, and sanded. Each float includes a 6″ top loop of cotton rope with an eye splice and frayed tail end.
They are attractive when displayed in a basket, hanging on a doorknob or hook, on a mantle or bookshelf, or along a fence or patio railing.
My grandfather, George Moskovita, was a commercial fisherman and we are pleased to share a token of our family’s fishing heritage with you at Forsythea.
